Shutdown Day 15: A Fork in the Political Road

Yesterday morning I wrote about a veterans rally in Washington where Sens. Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and former Governor Sarah Palin made a showing shouting, “Tear down these walls” and seemingly acting like they had just stormed the beaches of Normandy.

Yesterday afternoon CNN reported that the veterans who put on the rally were not happy that Cruz, Lee, and Palin had hijacked their rally. The group issued a statement saying, “We feel disheartened that some would seek to hijack the narrative for political gain.”

I’m with my fellow veterans, as are most Americans. We also feel pretty disheartened that Cruz and his Tea Party members hijacked our country and shutdown the government.

The hijacking at the memorials has happened many times since the shutdown. As many folks have said, one of the most dangerous places to be in this country is between a politician and a television camera.

I wrote about politicians and memorials last week, saying “As for the politicians and right-wing radio and TV hosts exploiting these veterans to promote their agenda: get a life. Better yet, maybe you should join the military.”

Speaking of the Tea Party, back in Montana, Steve Daines had his hand slapped again this morning. This time it was the Great Falls Tribune editorial board writing about raising the debt limit:

It’s time for some leadership on Capitol Hill to avert a genuine international mess. U.S. Rep. Steve Daines, R-Mont., has sided with the far right wing so far in the House budget controversy. We would suggest he reassess that stance for the good of the country and the state.

There may be an agreement in the works to fund the government and raise the debt limit. It looks like the agreement will start in the U.S. Senate and, if it passes there, move to the U.S. House.

Remember, this mess started with the idea to defund Obamacare. Over two weeks ago I said it was not going to happen. It still is not going to happen.

If the Senate agreement does get to the House, it will be decision time for Tea Party members like Steve Daines.

With his future in politics already tainted, Daines has arrived at a fork in the political road – Will he side with the Tea Party or will he side with America?

For most people that would be an easy choice.
