On Friday when all the polls seemed to be showing Republican and Tea Party favorable ratings in the toilet, I imagine many people on the right were thinking, “We gotta get out of this place.”
Today starts a new week (it’s also Columbus Day) and we’re in day 14 of the Federal Government shutdown. If you enjoy politics and government, then this is going to be exciting!
The Republicans are cornered and they are searching for a way out to save face. The Democrats may not be willing to give them an easy way out. They want to make sure there’s no way the Republicans can’t own the shutdown – and if the GOP wants to screw with the debt limit, the Democrats will make them own that, too.
This is going to be an interesting week because the debt limit deadline is Thursday. Thursday is the day when the United States would no longer be able to borrow. It will be like going to the store and using your credit card to make your purchase and having your card declined.
If you’ve experienced that first-hand, you know how embarrassing it can be. Instead of you and I not being able to pay for groceries or gas; the USA may not be able pay our debt to China or make Social Security payments.
Default won’t happen overnight. The Associated Press has some key dates in regards to the debt limit HERE. One key date is October 23, which is when a $12 billion Social Security payment is due.
On Sunday, we witnessed some “heroic” action as three Tea Party members stormed the monuments in Washington, D.C. Sens. Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and former Governor Sarah Palin made a showing shouting, “Tear down these walls” and seemingly acting like they had just stormed the beaches of Normandy.
Chickenhawks act like that. Today we’ll undoubtedly hear right-wing radio exalt the bravery of these “patriots.”
